Why I Switched to Wool Dryer Balls (and When I Still Use Dryer Sheets)

Illustration of wool dryer balls and a woven basket with a blanket – natural laundry essentials.

When I started becoming more conscious of the chemicals in our home—especially after seeing how my daughter’s sensitive skin reacted to fragranced products—I looked for every small change I could make. But honestly, even before we discovered her sensitivities, I knew as a newborn I didn’t want to add any unnecessary chemicals to her clothes.

That’s when I bought my very first set of wool dryer balls—just for her infant onesies, blankets, and swaddles that we washed daily. I’ve always hated static cling, and going without dryer sheets felt like a sacrifice. I even tried scrunching up aluminum foil to cut the static (it didn’t work well, by the way). But once I found out how effective wool dryer balls could be, I was hooked—and I’ve never looked back.

1. What Are Wool Dryer Balls?

Wool dryer balls are tightly wound balls of 100% wool that go into your dryer with your clothes. As they bounce around, they naturally separate clothing, allowing hot air to circulate better, reducing dry time and softening clothes—without any chemical coatings or synthetic scents.

2. Why I Made the Switch

I used to buy those big boxes of dryer sheets, not realizing they were loaded with synthetic fragrance and ingredients that lingered on fabric. It wasn’t until my daughter started having reactions that I seriously reconsidered what we were using—especially after my husband pointed out that dryer sheets are actually coated in chemicals and oily residues that cling to fabric. I was shocked to learn they were making our “clean” clothes dirty all over again.

I wanted something natural, reusable, and gentle. Wool dryer balls felt like a no-brainer. As Martha Stewart aptly put it:

This philosophy mirrors my journey toward creating a healthier home environment, starting with the simple switch to wool dryer balls for my family’s laundry.
They’re:

  • Fragrance-free
  • Chemical-free
  • Long-lasting (mine have lasted over a year!)
  • Compostable at the end of their life

3. How I Use Them

I pop in three wool balls for smaller loads—which, let’s be honest, are rare in our family. Most of the time, I toss in six wool balls with full laundry loads—especially towels, bedding, and everyday clothes. I like to fill the dryer to save energy, and the extra balls help everything dry more evenly and faster without clumping.

4. When I Still Use Dryer Sheets

Here’s the real talk: My daughter’s school uniforms are made of heavy-duty synthetic fabric. And no matter how many wool balls I throw in, the static cling from polyester overwhelms everything.

So I started doing those loads separately—and for just the uniforms, I use a plant-based, fragrance-free dryer sheet. It works well and keeps that synthetic feel from transferring to the rest of our laundry. I still toss in three wool dryer balls to help the load dry faster and more evenly.
To stretch things even further (and waste less), I often tear the dryer sheets in half—a little frugal trick that still gets the job done.

It’s all about balance. For 90% of our loads, wool balls are perfect. For that 10% that just won’t quit, I make the cleanest choice I can.

5. Laundry That Feels Good—Inside and Out

Wool dryer balls might seem like a small switch, but for us, it was part of a bigger journey toward fewer chemicals, less waste, and more thoughtful choices.

That’s why we offer our own Jane Sweetpea Wool Dryer Balls—made from natural, biodegradable wool and thoughtfully packaged with care. They’re a simple, gentle upgrade for your laundry routine.
